April is Moetry Ponth!

April is Moetry Ponth!

No, I didn't forget to run chell speck!  Today I shared Shel Silverstein's Runny Babbit with Mrs. Gray's second clade grass.  Here's the first boem in the pook:

At the beginning of class I greeted the students in the hallway and complemented them on having a line that was gooking lood.  Their puzzled expressions quickly turned to eager faces when I repeated the phrase and they spoke up with the translation, "Looking good!"  I continued with jice nob, and even more students responded with an excited, "Nice job!"  After directing them to come in and have a reat on the sug, I then took attendance (switching the letters of their first and last names of course).  The students loved listening to the pilly soems almost as much as I enjoyed theading rem!

Click here to visit the official Shel Silverstein website.   Click on "Let's Have Some Fun" to access games and puzzles, free downloads, and printables.  If you click on "Shel's Books" you'll be able to watch animated poems including three from Runny Babbit!  There's lots of other neat stuff on the website too, so take some time to explore.  Have fun, and Happy Moetry Ponth to you!

Hooray for Digging Day!

This third grader found the first diamond of the day!
We had so much fun during the last day of Reading Week!  Students who brought in their "Mining Maps" and followed all the directions got to participate in "Digging Day" and search for buried treasure!  Everyone who dug through our sand bucket found a gem to keep, and the lucky few who found a rare diamond also got to choose an extra prize.  (Thanks again to our PTO for providing the funds for this terrific activity!)

Just a few of our lucky diamond finders!

Mrs. Bartkiewicz and I were absolutely amazed by all the incredible work that was handed in along with the students' mazes.  We have a lot to look through during vacation, and we'll have more prizes to hand out when we come back!  Here are a couple poems for you to enjoy...

An Acrostic Poem by Nathan C., 3V
Reading is awesome
Endings are happy
Authors write books
Dig Deep into a good book
I love to read
New books, old books
Going to the library
Words are in books
Every book should be cared for
Every book should be read
Keep reading books!

Reading by Kaylee, 3V
Reading a book is fun,
And when you're done
Get another one!

Some fourth graders show off their new "bling"!

Dig Deep! Unearth a Good Book!

Happy Reading Week!

Our "Dig Deep Mining Maze"!
This year's Reading Week theme is Dig Deep! Unearth a Good Book!  To encourage our students to engage in some fun reading activities, we created a "Dig Deep Mining Maze".  All students received a copy today, but you can also access it by clicking on these links:

Dig Deep activity page 1

Dig Deep activity page 2 (directions)

Students who bring in a completed form (activities done and questions answered along the chosen path) will be allowed to "Dig for Treasure"  during recess on Friday!  We will have a sand box with "gems" inside.  Most of them will be one of a variety of colors, but a few special ones will be clear "diamonds".  The students will be allowed to reach in and select a gem to keep.  Students who find the rare diamonds will win an extra prize!  (Students can also earn an extra prize by dazzling us with the quality of the work they hand in!  Think of the four C's: creativity, completeness, color and care!)

Ruby, sapphire, diamond, amethyst, or topaz...which will you get???

Don't forget, completed forms are due Friday morning.
Have fun, and good luck!!!
