Poetry Out Loud 2019

The day started out dark and rainy, so this year's event was moved indoors to the CMS auditorium.  Fortunately the dreariness outside had no affect on the sunny dispositions of the excited students waiting to perform!

Mr. Gencarelli photobombing our fourth graders!

Backstage and ready to go!

Backstage the students were buzzing with enthusiasm as they waited for the 6th annual Poetry Out Loud event to begin.  Coordinated by Hope Valley principal Mr. Gencarelli, this wonderful evening celebrates these young poets and gives them an opportunity to share their work aloud with an appreciative audience.  Some pieces made us laugh out loud while others moved us with their sincerity.  All of them were original and we were impressed by the students' creativity!  Thank you, Mr. G, for another successful and heart-warming evening!

How Teachers Are the Best
By Ruby, Grade 2

Teachers put time.  Teachers put effort.
Teachers teach us.
Good things, boring things, all things cool.
Teachers - kind, wonderful people.
I’m thankful for my teachers.

Softball
By Harper, Grade 2

Playing softball is so much fun!
You get to throw.
You get to run.
You get to slide.
You can run, but you can’t hide!
I can’t wait ‘til I can play.
Especially in the month of May.
The weather then seems just right.
The sun gives off the perfect light.
All the parents stand and scream.
Everyone cheers for their own team.
Softball is my favorite game,
So look for me in the Hall of Fame!

 Fourth Grade is Near
By Lily and Keelyn, Grade 3

Fourth grade is near, did you hear?
3rd grade is starting to disappear
It was fun, but now it is done
Mrs. Moffitt and Mrs. Bliven have  brought so much fun.

Concentration, multiplication, reading, math, and science rotations
Science, technology, engineering and math
These things help us move along our learning path.

Next year we will be the oldest of our pack
Our younger friends will follow our tracks.
Big or small we will help them all
As we set good examples walking in the hall.

Fourth grade is near, did you hear?
3rd grade is starting to disappear
As the end grows close we will miss our teachers and friends the most.
We look forward to 4th grade and all that we´ll do
Good-bye grade 3...we will miss you!

Well done, Ashaway School poets! Thank you for sharing your talents with us!

Poetry Out Loud Celebration

On Monday students from all four elementary schools gathered to participate in the 5th annual Poetry Out Loud celebration (formerly "Poetry Slam").  This remarkable event, coordinated by Hope Valley principal Mr. Gencarelli, invites students to stand before an audience to read aloud an original work of poetry.  Each presentation was a treat, and it was wonderful to watch the students enjoy a moment to shine on stage!

It was a beautiful, sunny day so we gathered in the high school courtyard.  Please enjoy these happy memories of an lovely June evening!

Mermaids in the Sea
By Joandrie, Grade 2

Swimming up
Swimming down
They swim all around

Whales and dolphins are their friends
To them the fun never ends

Shiny shells and leftover things
Is what they call their treasures
Don’t get too close or they’ll steal
Your heart forever.

Skiing
By Paige, Grade 4

Sliding down the slope pushing with my poles,
Riding up the chairlift, flying over jumps.
 Learning more and more,
Falling over and over,
Skiing with my family, skiing with my friends, skiing all together,
Because friendship never ends.
Down a black diamond, right over a jump, plop on my back, Back up again.
Going to a race, I’m gonna win first place, passing my opponents, I just won the race.
Super duper tired, snoozing in my bed, super duper tired, I think I might be dead.
Back up on the slopes, warm up in the green, back up on the diamonds, flying down with speed.  Again another race, again I won first place, again back in my bed, again I think I’m dead. Now my trip is over, we’re packing up the car, putting on my headphones, listening to some tunes.  No I’m back home, laying in my bed, lot of memories in my head.

Spring is Coming, Spring is Coming!
By Harper, Grade 1

Spring is coming, spring is coming!
Spring is in the air
Bears are growling
Birds are singing
Coyotes are howling
Spring is in the air!
Trees are budding
Flowers are blooming
Bees are everywhere
Lots of rain, no more snow
Spring is in the air
Spring is ending
Summer vacation is near
Swimming, playing, running, camping
It’s my favorite time of year!

My Magnificent Mother
By Alisa, Grade 3

Sweet,
nice,
confident mother
I love her.
With all my heart.
She’s the best.
I will never let her go.
Help me?
I’ll help you.
Sweet, sweet mother,
I love you.

Brushes
By Jordan, Grade 4

There's all different brushes
Any brush is useful
There's dog brushes and cat brushes

There are toothbrushes and hair brushes
All hygienic in a way

And there’s even working brushes
Like paintbrushes
Different sizes and shapes

You choose which one you'd like to use

I'm so proud of all the students who not only wrote their own poetry but also confidently stood up on stage to share their writing with us.  Awesome job, everyone!!

4th Annual Poetry Slam!

Tuesday night I had the great pleasure of attending Chariho's 4th Annual Elementary Poetry Slam!  This year 79 students from the district participated, and 16 of them were from Ashaway!  I loved listening to the wide variety of poems that the students had prepared.  Some were long and some were short, some were funny and some were unbelievably touching.  It was a wonderful evening of children showcasing their work and taking pride in a job well done.

When a Day Goes Wrong
By David, Grade 2
When things go wrong
The day seems long
But I hold my head up
Like a lion I’m strong

I stand with no fear
And with that I must say
There’s always tomorrow
And tomorrow’s a new day

The Crow
By Alyvia, Grade 3

The crow sat on my windowsill,
One night when everything was still,
He just sat there, frozen, still
The crow that was on my windowsill.

 Doggy
By Fiona and Julia, Grade 4

Jumping, pouncing, running around
It is so much fun
I am a puppy that came from a pound
I am a number one
I bark every time you come through the door
And you say stop, stop, stop
Even though you say this I know every day you love me more
Every night on my bed I plop
And then I start to sleep
And then I start to have good dreams
And all night through I don’t say a peep
And every morning I wake up to say
“Bark bark” it’s a brand new day!

Hip hip hooray
It’s doggy day!

Caribbean
by Paige, Grade 3

Welcome to the Caribbean,
Where the ocean is as blue as the sky.
Where apple kale ice cream is served,
instead of rocky road.
Where beautiful fish rome the crystal clear waters.
Where dolphins glide through the water at sunrise.
Where tarpon dart toward underwater lights at dark.
Where sun sets are are pink, purple, yellow  orange, and gold, like the end of the rainbow.
Where everything is amazingly beautiful,
Welcome to the Caribbean!

Enjoy your time while you have it,
Cause it will fly by fast………….

Welcome back home, back to reality.

And paddle boarding
At the beach

Licking, slurping

At the ice cream parlor

Skateboarding, rollerblading
And biking
In the park

And basketball
At the sports field

Summer is so much fun
When you spend it
Doing activities you love!

Chariho's Second Elementary Poetry Slam!

Tonight I was delighted to be a part of Chariho's second-ever Elementary Poetry Slam!  Twenty-three of the sixty participants were from Ashaway School, so we were very well represented!  I'm so proud of the students who not only followed through on penning an original poem, but also for courageously standing in front of an audience to share their work.

It was a wonderful evening and my thanks go out to all who helped to make it happen!!

Secret World
By Samantha, Grade 3

There are secret worlds out there
With unicorns and dragons.
With grass as soft as feathers.
And blossoms as pretty as a whale’s tail.
And clouds as pretty as polka-dotted dresses.
And golden scales as shiny as the sun.
Where the unicorns and dragons have peaceful lives.

I Like Reading
By Paige, Grade 1

I like reading, it’s so fun
I think I like every one.
I like reading so you know
Reading makes you grow.

It does not make you tall
It makes your brain not so small.
I like to read when it snows
Then I feel happy and it shows.

It relaxes me before bed
As stories play in my head.
I like to read when the sun comes up
Then my mom yells time to get up!

My Cat is Happy
By Ava, Grade 1
My cat is happy
Purr Purr Purr
My cat makes me happy
Smile Smile Smile
We are both happy
All the while
At night we cuddle together
Dream Dream Dream

Science is Everything
By Gabrielle and Lilly, Grade 3

Science is everything, it’s true!
Science even created you!

Science made our schools and houses!
Science made our cats and mouses!

Science made our moon and stars.
Science made Neptune and Mars!

Science made our flowers and plants!
Science made your shirts and pants!

Science made the chairs you sit in.
Science made the world we live in!

See, science is everything!

Hop Toads
By Sadie, Grade 1 & Mabel, Grade 4
Crick croak crick croak
I’m a tiny toad
hop stop hop stop
hopping down the road
brown gray slimy bumpy
please don’t run me over
too hot getting grumpy
looking for some clover
green grass damp and dewy
full of juice bugs
eat them up ooey gooey
great big gulping chugs.

My Night
By Emma, Grade K
A monster went in my room
And I didn’t know what to do
But then there was another monster
Then I had an idea!
I ate a cookie!

Colors!
By Zoe, Grade 2

The sky is painted blue
The mountains are painted white
Snow leopards roam the mountains
And owls fly at night

The trees are painted green and brown
The water is painted blue
Monkeys live in the trees

And fish live in the blue

Leaves are painted green
Sticks are painted brown
Leaves float in the breeze
And sticks lay on the ground

The rainbow has all the colors
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue
And did you know there’s purple too?

Thanks for organizing another terrific event, Mr. Gencarelli!
YOU ROCK!!
